Hard rubbish collection

Brimbank residents are eligible for one free hard rubbish/green waste collection per financial year. This means you can have your old household items and green waste picked up from your property that can't be placed (or don't fit) in your kerbside collection bins.

Eligibility

All residential properties receiving a waste service in Brimbank are entitled to one no-charge hard rubbish collection each financial year (1 July-30 June annually).

Before you book a collection

  • Know what types of hard rubbish and green waste we will and won’t collect
  • Place items at the front property line, not more than 2 metres into the property with clear access for the collection crews.  Please contact us if you don’t have space for this: 03 9249 4728.
  • Each residential property is eligible for one free hard rubbish collection. This includes 4m3 of hard rubbish and/or 2m3 of green waste. If you would like both 4m3 of hard rubbish and 2m3 of green waste as part of your one free collection, they must be booked at the same time.
  • Please do not stack hard rubbish or green waste against any fences or hedges.

Need to cancel your collection?

Need to cancel or amend your collection? This can be done online or over the phone before your collection date. Please let us know no later than 5pm on the Thursday before your week of collection.

Collection guidelines

Hard rubbish: what we will and won't collect

Mattresses and bed bases (1 set only) Items weighing more than 30kg each (excluding household appliances)
Household furniture and toys Items longer than 1.5m
Whitegoods (fridges need to have doors removed), air conditioners and hot water units Building or renovation materials (including bricks, concrete, excavation material, plaster, dirt, timber or stones)
Car tyres (4 maximum) Commercial or industrial trade wastes
Computers, televisions, and electrical equipment Household garbage
Scrap metal, tools and equipment including body parts, lawn mowers, roof iron and guttering Household recyclable goods
Pottery, ceramics and crockery Hazardous and/or offensive wastes (including abestos, chemicals and paint)
Sheet glass (up to 1.5m) securely wrapped in either cardboard or bubble wrap and clearly labelled 'GLASS'. Glass tabletops need to be removed from their frame prior to wrapping Car engines
Carpet/underlay (1.5m length once rolled, able to be lifted chest height by 2 people, 3 rolls maximum) 4WD, truck and tractor tyres
Tools equipment, car parts (not including engines), each item less than 30kg weight or 1.5m long Unwrapped broken glass

Mattresses and bed bases

You can have one mattress collected, however you must book the mattress as a separate item when you book your collection. Mattress collection does not include the bed base. You will need to also book a regular hard waste collection for your bed base.

Not too heavy! One person must be able to lift an item to shoulder height.

How much can be collected?

In one single collection, we’ll take:

  • 4 cubic metres of hard waste; and
  • 2 cubic metres of bundled green waste

To receive both hard rubbish and green waste collections you must book both services at the same time.

How to place your hard rubbish/green waste for collection

  • Put your items for collection 2 metres within the front of your property boundary.
  • Place in your front yard or at the start of your driveway.
  • Ensure there is clear access, no cars or locked gates – unless you’re told otherwise when you book.
  • In order to collect the items, our contractors must be able to reach your hard waste and green waste safely.
  • Present items neatly
  • Do not stack Hard Waste or Green Waste against any fences or hedges.

Failure to follow these guidelines may result in your hard waste not being collected and/or you having to arrange an additional paid service.

On collection week

Be ready! Put your items out on the Sunday before your collection week. Clearly separate your hard rubbish and green waste from other items on your property.
